Ouch! Burns can mean a red fingertip, a blister — or a trip to the ER. Most burns happen in the home, and most are absolutely avoidable.
- Don’t smoke in bed. Better yet, don’t smoke. Period.
- Keep those pot handles turned inwards (but not over another burner!)
- If your inner gourmet demands flambé, take your pan off the stove before adding the spirits.
- Put out a grease fire quickly with another pot lid, but first turn off the heat. Do not use water!
- Keep a first aid kit in the kitchen. Buttering a burn won’t suffice.
- Set your water heater(s) at no more than 120o F
- Always test the bath or shower water before getting in
- Check electrical cords for frays (pets and kids are known to chew them)
- Cover unused sockets at child level.
- Leave the fireworks to the pyrotechnical experts.
- Respect the hottest flame of all, the sun:
- Slather on the sunscreen.
- Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
- Fire prevention is burn prevention. So also remember to:
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, near outdoor grills and other places where you use open flames, such as a workshop.
- Place smoke detectors in every room and change the batteries twice a year (when the clocks go forward or back).
- Be cautious when using gas-powered equipment.
Finally, as if we need to remind you… Don’t stick a fork in the toaster!
